2 January 2024 According to Lady P, the spending for the holiday only starts on 1 Jan, so if we ignore NYE Champagne, food and accommodation, we’re pretty much on budget for daily Euro 100. It rained for the first time of our visit last night and is still raining lightly this morning. May have to duck into Monoprix for a cheap umbrella before heading off to explore the west of Paris. We saw the temperatures in Helsinki this morning and as we will be there in a fortnight, the minus 12c and minus 19c being experienced gave us pause to reconsider additional layers that may be needed before we arrive rather than when we arrive there. Will have a look about at stores today. Talking about clothing and the weather, our puffer jackets are brilliant but not waterproof. So, after heading to the café for coffee this morning, it became obvious, that in our quest for light baggage, we, that is Flashy, needs to find a solution that meets waterproof and warmth. You see, the Paris...

ANZAC Day 2024 There has been some minor criticism of my description of the Bushmills distillery tour. I was acting under the assumption that my readers were well versed in the art of making and drinking whiskey. Anyway, the distillery, which claims to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world, was originally owned by Mr Phillips (two LL’s even). The various whiskeys are a product of barrel choice and years they are asleep in said barrels, before bottling. After touring the distillery from inwards goods, through the mashing of the barley, the fermentation in large stainless steel vats, the distillation room, bottling plant and poppi...
Saturday 20 January 2024 A balmy -12c today. Too cold for snow but Flashy’s old Alaskan bank robber neck roll came out to go under the trapper hat. He looks like something out of South Park. You can tell when it gets below -6c, you can feel it on your cheeks. However, off we went by trusty tram into the ferry terminal area to marvel at the frozen sea and wander about the outdoor market with the locals. A couple of the tents were serving refreshing beverages and the two famous Finnish dishes – meat pies and hot dogs. We noticed a number of men, women and kids emerging from the public sauna and immersing themselves in the icy sea water. We forgot to bring our reindeer-skin mat to sit on in the sauna, so had to give it a miss. Went to a nice bar for a coffee and a beer though. A pint of the local brew was very good. Since the sun was out in full, even if only for the next three hours, we went for a walk to build up the step count. A visit to a nearby Orthodox Cathedral was -...
