Friday 27 December 2024 Day 365 away today from Melbourne and day 416 since leaving Cairns and starting the house sitting, pet sitting, wandering nomad year in Europe. Overseas, we had 74% of our days free of accommodation costs. Flashy reckons this saved us $58,000 in potential accommodation costs. Trusted House Sitters and the Ogilvy clan were our saviours. Of this free accommodation, 40 days used up up all our home exchange points and the remaining 229 days, minding friends and others’ houses and pets. We looked after cats, dogs, chooks and ducks. All of which were delightful. The 16% of days for which we paid accommodation, were mainly BnB’s and 3 star hotels and again, these were all pretty good. Average nightly cost was $217. After checking out of the hotel, we went for a long walk, as we will be entombed in the A380 for 24 hours. The limo arrived on time and the check in at Charles de Gaul was seamless. The Emirates lounge is a bit dated and according to Lady P...

Thursday 14 to Monday 18 March 2024 Thursday Up early for a brief walk down to our local train station, Westhumble Box Hill, to catch the train to London. Unlike the UK's totally stuffed health system, the public transport system usually works beautifully, and so, we arrive at Clapham Junction in an hour, in a clean and comfortable carriage. An easy walk to our Air BnB to drop off bags and, in nice weather, we walk through Battersea Park across Albert Bridge to Kings Road, Chelsea to visit our old favourite café, the Bluebird for breakfast and to the Worlds End Distillery , a once proud pub serving Flashy pints by the open fire on his way home to Fulham some 30 years ago. A little tired now, the pub that is, only opening three days a week. Wanting to have a look at the food hall at Harrods, in the hope of getting pigeon, pheasant or hare, we walk to Fulham Rd and catch a bus to that paragon of gastronomy. It’s smaller than Flashy remembers. But that’s true of most things...
Wednesday 5 June 2024 Phase 3 of the concreting is completed. Another two bags to go, probably do this on Friday. A big day of washing, airing of suits etc as the sun is shining (all day too). Lady P stokes up the BBQ and cooks the fillet of beef, which we enjoy on the terrace. Darkness here is 10.30 pm, so it is often still light when we go to bed. And there are no streetlights in the village, consequently, it’s as black as a coal bin all night. Still, another slow day today, with cleaning, washing and attending to the pool. It is clearing nicely but a bit low still on chlorine. Thursday 6 June 2024 We went to Surgeres today. A pleasant drive just north of us 18 kms – about 20 mins and a largish (7,000) town with a market and the major train connection to Paris. Some shopping done and home to a ham and cheese baguette. Now, there was this little patisserie, with a line up out the door and down the street, with tradies buying filled baguettes and little ...
