After a morning of admin, we departed on a drive at 11.00 am to Fowey, a nice seaside town with plenty of pubs, shops and old buildings. After a coffee, Lady P says we should walk out to the castle. About 1 hr walk there and 1 hr back.

Flashy agrees, as it looks like an easy stroll. However, about half way, we started to descend down a long road towards the beach. The castle is on a hill. Going down also means that coming back, you are going uphill.

Flashy absolutely detests walking hills. Rather cut off his drinking arm with a blunt knife. What can be said? Did you enjoy the walk?, asks Lady P. Well, no actually.

At the castle, which is just  a turret and a pile of rocks, there is this laminated sign pinned to a tree branch advising the public that there is a private ceremony for an hour in the castle 'grounds', to spread Arlo’s  ashes, so please respect our gathering. Could have posted it at the top of the track, not at the bottom. However, deeply respectful of little Arlo, we quietly withdrew for the walk back to town. As a reward for not grumbling too much, Flashy was allowed to have a pint at the oldest pub in town, built 1435 but still in good nick.

Limping and hobbling back to the car, we head for Mevagisey, another lovely seaside Cornish town. Here the tide rises and falls over four metres, so the boats have very long mooring lines. Saw it on telly once. We had really good fish and chips at the Sharksfin Seaside Restaurant for a late lunch at 3 pm, then home to Gorran Haven.

A comment on the English beers. They are no longer warm and flat. Having said that, they aren't cold and sparkling either. Eminently drinkable nonetheless. I actually prefer the ales and IPA's to the lagers, even if the lagers are really well made and tasty. We also love the fact that people bring their dogs into the pubs and they are really well behaved. The dogs are good too.

So, now we've had a pasty, scones with clotted cream and jam and good old fish and chips. Cornwall - tick.

Pasties and sausage rolls. They sell like hot cakes!
Cornish beer
Haddock, ale batter, mushy peas, chips and  home made tartar sauce
Blue(ish) sky but still a bit chilly
A sculpture of a bird and a man with a dog
Famous pub for some unknown reason
Nob hill on the walk to the castle. A few quid there, I reckon.
Boats lying on the mud, waiting for the 4m tide
